Lingering in Late Summer: When Summer Relaxes

Early summer is ambitious. Pots are planted. Porch railings are painted. Gardens are weeded. Plans are made. Everything's fresh and green, the dock's in the water... and we're going to have the BEST SUMMER EVER.

Lingering in late summer?

The flowers are leaning over. The grass is crispy in places. A few apples are dropping on the ground. Towels are permanently hanging somewhere. The porch has accumulated stuff. Nobody even notices anymore.

Late summer is...

  • when the calendar says fall's coming and the tomatoes say absolutely not.

  • when you grab a sweater on a cloudy morning for a store run only now it's sunny & 78 degrees.

  • when the garden looks exhausted but somehow won't stop producing zucchini.

  • when the flowers have gone slightly feral.

  • when the lawn finally gives you a fighting chance.

  • when you stop worrying about mosquito bites because you're on the third round of poison ivy.

  • when the lake is warmer than the morning air.

  • when you're craving that hot mug at 7 a.m. and ice cream by 2.

  • when everything looks a little overgrown, sun-faded and... better for it.

  • when summer relaxes and simply quits trying so hard.

And honestly, by mid-August you're totally ready for it.

In fact, by Labor Day I'll find myself cleaning grasshoppers out of the pool side-eyeing those tinged leaves above the flailing forsythia bushes and mumble, "Oh no, guys, don't even think about turning red yet."
